A solo exhibition by Freya Doggett curated by Berfin Cicek.
Most of life unfolds in its ordinary moments.
Between conversations, destinations and occasions lie the periods that quietly shape the greater part of a day: a familiar ritual, an afternoon spent doing very little, a brief encounter with a passer-by. These experiences rarely announce their significance, yet together they form the texture of a life.
And Meanwhile draws attention to the ordinary rituals that so often escape notice. Freya Doggett’s paintings capture people absorbed in the quotidian habits of living: gathering, waiting, wandering, resting or existing alongside one another. Their gestures feel instinctively recognisable, inviting us to discover fragments of our own experiences within contexts that belong to someone else.
Through loose, expressive brushwork, Doggett allows her subjects to remain indistinct, while their surroundings dissolve into broad passages of colour. Narrative is held in suspension, and the particulars of these occasions recede while their atmosphere remains. It is in that residue that these paintings find their familiarity. By giving lasting form to moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed, Doggett encourages us to reconsider the value of the seemingly insignificant.
And Meanwhile makes the case for the in-between, proposing that life is not only defined by its milestones, but by what happens around them.
