Berfîn Çiçek is a British Kurdish artist from north London. After initially earning a degree in architecture, she then pursued her passion for art. Çiçek trained at the London Fine Art atelier and established her studio in south London. Çiçek's diverse practice in painting and sculpture explores life's complex patterns. As an emerging artist she faced many challenges, particularly those affecting marginalised communities. To address this, she founded Cicek Gallery, which supports underrepresented artists.
About
On this tour, Berfîn Çiçek, who runs a gallery for underrepresented artists, invites you on a personal journey through the collection. Just 27 artworks in the National Gallery's collection are by women. Despite their sparsity, women artists play a crucial role in the stories we tell at the Gallery. Çiçek zooms in on these artists and their work in this illuminating tour.
Spanning the 16th to the 19th century, artists like Eva Gonzalès, Rachel Ruysch and Rosa Bonheur were rebellious rule-breakers who defied convention and fearlessly stepped beyond societal boundaries. These trailblazers still resonate with women artists today.
